چکیده

Five series of experiments were accomplished, utilizing a total of 190 birds. The established methods of the department's atherosclerosis research team were followed throughout. One-day old Hy-Line chicks were obtained from a commercial hatchery and reared in a battery brooder on a diet of commercial chick starter mash. At onset of the study, the birds were divided into experimental groups and placed on the atherogenic diet (chick starter mash + 1 or 2 per cent cholesterol + 5 per cent cottonseed oil). In essence, the experiment involved comparison of patterns of lipemia and atherogenesis (aorta and coronary) in 4 groups of birds on the same atherogenic diet—group 1, control; group 2, estrogen-treated; group 3, hypothyroid; group 4, estrogen-treated hypothyroid (table 1). In series 35 and 38, hypothyroidism was induced by thiouracil feeding, begun simultaneously with the onset of the

Estrogen-induced regression of coronary atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed chicks.

The present study demonstrates that estrogens reverse previously induced coronary atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed cockerels, despite the continued presence of the atherogenic stimulus in the diet. Aorta atherogenesis remains unaffected. Hypercholesterolemia is moderately enhanced by estrogen administration; total cholesterol-lipid phosphorus (C/P) ratios are depressed to normal levels, conse...

Prevention of coronary atherosclerosis by estrogen-androgen administration in the cholesterol-fed chick.

Estrogens are highly effective both prophylactieally and therapeutically against cholesterol-induced coronary atherogenesis in cockerels. The relative immunity of premenopausal women to coronary sclerosis may be related to the presence of these ovarian hormones. Therefore, estrogens may be useful in the treatment of human coronary atherosclerosis. With this object in mind, the elimination of th...

Aiidrojjen Inhibition of Atherogenesis in Pullets

THE higher incidence of coronary atherosclerosis in young male as compared with young female humans is well established as are similar sex differences in susceptibility in some other species. The administration of female sex hormones to cholesterol-fed cockerels has been reported to have beneficial prophylactic as well as therapeutic effects on coronary atherosclerosis. In one study reported by...

Susceptibility of the ovariectomized hen to cholesterol-induced coronary atherogenesis.

PREVIOUS studies from this department demonstrated that exogenous estrogens protected cockerels against cholesterol-induced coronary atherogenesis." Further, mature, egg-producing hens, intact or oviduct-ligated, were also markedly resistant to the development of diet-induced coronary lesions. It was postulated that this protection was a resultant of the endogenous, physiologic estrogen secreti...
